Dalam sebuah pesan yang beredar luas, mengklaim bahwa sebuah gambar menunjukkan 500 orang Kristiani dibakar dalam pembantaian yang dilakukan oleh teroris Muslim.
Foto tersebut asli, tetapi tidak menunjukkan serangan teroris, melainkan tubuh orang yang terbakar akibat ledakan tanki bahan bakar di Kongo. Meski Nigeria memiliki sejarah panjang dan berdarah atas kekerasan bermotif agama (propaganda), ledakan ini adalah kecelakaan tragis dan bukan pekerjaan teroris Muslim. Juga bukan sesuatu yang ditargetkan pada orang-orang Kristen, dan klaim dalam pesan tidak memiliki dasar fakta.
Kesimpulan :
Menurut pesan yang beredar melalui situs media sosial, blog dan email, gambar grafis yang disertai tulisan mengarah propaganda tersebut menggambarkan tubuh hangus dari 500 orang Kristen Nigeria yang dibakar dalam serangan berorientasi agama oleh teroris Muslim.
Pesan tersebut mengklaim bahwa pembantaian yang terjadi telah diabaikan oleh media mainstream, kisah dan gambar telah dihapus dari Facebook karena dianggap menghilangkan informasi tentang serangan itu dari publik.
Namun, sayangnya klaim ini tidak memiliki dasar fakta ataupun bukti yang valid. Foto yang digunakan dalam pesan untuk 'menggambarkan pembantaian' memang foto (dokumentasi) asli, tetapi tidak menggambarkan serangan oleh teroris Islam seperti yang diklaim, lagipula gambar tersebut juga tidak diambil di Nigeria. Faktanya, gambar itu memperlihatkan mayat orang yang tewas dalam ledakan besar tanker bahan bakar yang terjadi di Republik Demokratik Kongo pada bulan Juli 2010.
Sebuah artikel berita Reuters tentang kecelakaan itu mencatat.:

Ledakan itu adalah akibat dari kecelakaan tragis dan tentu saja bukan serangan teroris Muslim terhadap umat Kristen. Tidak ada laporan yang dapat dipercaya tentang pembantaian seperti yang dijelaskan dalam pesan klaim di atas. Dengan demikian, tampaknya bahwa pencipta hoax telah mengambil gambar yang tidak berhubungan dan membuat kisah yang berunsur propaganda.
Dan, tuduhan dalam pesan bahwa media mainstream sengaja mengabaikan serangan teroris terhadap orang-orang Kristen tidak berdasar dan sebenarnya agak konyol. Lebih jauh lagi, sementara Facebook mungkin memiliki kebijakan untuk menghapus seluruh gambar yang dianggap sebagai sebuah tindakan 'kekerasan' atau 'tidak pantas'', diklaim juga bahwa perusahaan-perusahaan asing tunduk pada teroris Islam adalah tidak masuk akal.
Setelah kami telusuri diberbagai situs, klaim serta gambar hoax ini ada oknum usil lain yang menggantinya dengan judul yang hampir serupa "500 Orang Muslim Dibakar oleh Massa Kristen di Nigeria,"
Hmm, ada-ada saja ulah pencipta hoax ini. Menceritakan kebohongan untuk memajukan agenda politik atau agama tertentu adalah kontraproduktif dan penyebaran informasi yang salah (adu-domba) seperti ini hanya akan membuat api kebencian diantara umat beragama (intoleransi). Pembuat hoax menyalahgunakan gambar (yang menunjukkan mayat korban kecelakaan) untuk mendorong pandangan dunia dan menggiring opini masyarakat. Waspadalah sistem propaganda!
Tetapi kami yakin, bahwa propaganda seperti ini hanya ulah orang-orang usil yang memiliki agenda tertentu untuk tujuan politik. Tidak mudah terpancing oleh isu-isu palsu adalah jalan terbaik menyikapi hal seperti ini.
